Thanks for the clarification, Nicky! I guess this will mean that we have a bit of a hole for anyone who's writing for the 11+ age group but it's not fantasy, but let's deal with that when we hit it. In the mean time I will add that we now have 3 v...

About Me
Volcano Child by Candy Gourlay Ugly City by Candy Gourlaymy blog

I am British SCBWI's webmaster and I passionately believe that the rise of the social web is an exciting opportunity for children's authors to engage with readers. I returned to my native Philippines in 2005, to write and present the Radio 4 documentary, Motherless Nation about the children left behind by migrant workers. The experience inspired me to write two novels, Volcano Child and Ugly City - both of which, I hope, puts a human face to third world calamity and globalization . Ugly City won a place in SCBWI's first Undiscovered Voices anthology. My short story How to Build the Perfect Sand Castle is featured in Under the Weather, an anthology of short stories on climate change published by Frances Lincoln and edited by Tony Bradman. I have written a short anthology of animal trickster stories for Oxford University Press and a series of stories for Cbeebies Radio on BBC 7. I am represented by Hilary Delamere of The Agency.

What are you working on at the moment?
I have finished my 11+ coming of age novel Tall Story and started a teen novel, SAVED, which is another coming of age story, this time with a bit of horror.
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
It's impossible to choose just one so I will try to offer up books I read and loved recently, one for every age group (cheating, I know): for 7+ — COSMIC by Frank Cottrell Boyce is funny and heartwarming; for 8+ boys who like Star Wars and graphic novels there's LEVIATHAN by Scott Westerfeld, amazing. for 8+ smart girls: PINK CHAMELEON by Fiona Dunbar; for 11+ THE RED DRESS by Gaby Halberstam, set in South Africa; for teenagers, WHEN I WAS JOE by Keren David.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Write for the love of writing, first of all, and you won't regret anything.
