What I Learned from Writing My Second Novel

About Me
TALL STORY by Candy Gourlay Under the Weather Animal Tricksters by Candy GourlayCbeebies Radiomy blog

I used to be British SCBWI's webmaster and I passionately believe that the rise of the social web is an exciting opportunity for children's authors to engage with readers.

My novel TALL STORY won the Crystal Kite Prize for Europe, SCBWI's regional award. Thank you, to all who voted for Tall Story I am so touched by your support.

Tall Story was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and shortlisted for 11 prizes. Visit TallStory.net

"... A sweet quirky fable as a coming of age account of two siblings ...Gourlay is herself a Filipina, and her voice rings true as she highlights what separates – and unites – cultures." Judith Woods, The Telegraph

"The possibility of the supernatural woven into a life of struggle makes this faintly reminiscent of Louis Sachar's Holes ... A lovely book, as colourful, cheerful and original as its cover." Amanda Craig, The Times

"Making use of Philippine superstitions and legends, the novel brings magic to a down-home story of earthquakes and sibling love." Nicolette Jones, The Sunday Times 100 Best Summer Books

"Convincing, witty and poignant." The Bookseller Panel Choice for June 2010

In 2008, my 8+ chapter book Ugly City won a place in SCBWI's first Undiscovered Voices anthology.

I am represented by Hilary Delamere of The Agency.

Looking to inspire the inspirers ...

On my recent trip to my native Philippines I visited schools in outlying towns that don't normally get visits from authors. I wanted to inspire the inspirers - so I asked to meet teachers. It was an extraordinary experience http://www.candygourlay.com/2012/03/shhh-im-writing.html

The Book is Dead? Not in THIS School!

I was thrilled to attend this school quiz which featured Tall Story. Strange and exciting to hear detailed quiz questions about one's book ... and WONDERFUL to hear children cheering and stamping and excited about reading http://bit.ly/AmAofL
