Becoming Invisible

Becoming Invisible is the book that won me a place in the 2010 Undiscovered Voices anthology.
Synopsis:
Lima’s streets are littered with strays. Diego and his friends pay them little heed, stepping over them as they do the rubbish. They refer to them as the invisibles and treat them as such.
Until the day Diego becomes one.
The journals of Diego and his friends tell the stories of their quest to find him and his quest for survival in a darkly twisted underworld where he is far from invisible.

I can be contacted at: daylightprocrastinator@gmail.com
A writer of children’s stories, books and scripts, I am also a philosopher, observer, listener, teacher, video maker and photographer. I love working with children of all shapes and styles and love the fact that children have so much to teach me. I have traveled far and wide and taught in Peru and Spain and am now in Devon.
I have also had two science textbooks published and am a member of the SoA.
What are you working on at the moment?
A YA supernatural romance and a middle-grade eco story starring my spider - slaying cat Sam!
If you had to recommend just one children's book you've read in the last year, what would it be?
Nicholas Dane by Melvin Burgess
(Numbers
Ways To Live Forever
Broken Soup
Not a book but the DFC was great too)
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
It surprises me far too often how much I love writing and the only sure way to avoid forgetting is to Write Every Day!
Still forgetting and re-learning this one...

Lottery Tickets and Query Letters

A brief blog this week on why it takes courage to keep sending the book out there and raising the question (familiar to all my fellow writers I'm sure): When is it time to call it quits and devote all your attention to the next book?http://daylightprocrastinator.wordpress.com/2010/11/12/lottery-tickets-2/See More

Rave Rejections

Yes I’ve had enough rejections now to warrant a blog post. Enough to know that quality of rejection letters is significant and I have to say that BecomingInvisible has had some good ones. In fact they are improving. Mostimportantly they prove that my work is getting read – thanks in no smallpart to SCBWI and the Undiscovered Voices anthology... Continued at:…See More

Hi Yona!

Yes, I have requested to join the SW group over a week ago but just waiting approval I think? It would be great to go to the write-in sessions however, I work full time so can only do evenings or weekends. Would be good to see the list of events though to see if I can attend any!

Yes, the four days a week was a bit of a shock in the pay-slip department! Still trying hard to keep at the writing in between Christmas plays, carol services and nasty colds! It's a bit of an uphill struggle at the moment.

As for you hearing nothing yet... no news is good news!

Hi Yona, hope you're on the mend. Yes, Borders closing put a very big spoke in the wheel. I was especially sad for the lovely children's specialist at the Manchester branch who has been so helpful and enthusiastic about Danny Baker. Macmillan had several events planned around the Northern stores, but apparently, Waterstones will be saving the day. I've also linked up with two independents in Cheshire and Merseyside, and intend to support them as much as possible. If all we have left is Amazon, then how will our readers get to know about our books?

Anyway, only two weeks to go before the first two books are launched - exciting times! I've also just been told that I've been booked to appear at the Edinburgh Book Festival in August! How cool is that! You've got all this to come - get your talks prepared!

Yes Yona, exciting times! Unfortunately, the Borders problem has come at precisely the wrong moment for me - I had a large event planned in January at the manchester branch, and was due to talk to the Northern Children's Co-ordinator in Newcastle next week to set up more events at their stores, but all that has folded with the business. It seems that Amazon may be the only place left soon to buy a book.

However, I am still very excited about the prospect of seeing Danny Baker on some shelves at long last!

All the best,
Steve

Hi, yes I moved here about 4 years ago from London. Well done with getting the book ready - I think mine is still a long way off - got very helpful comments back with a rejection last week!

It must be quite nice being between jobs - I've gone down to 4 days a week, but only until Feb. I can decide then whether to make it permanent! Anyway, good luck with sending off your book, I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Thanks, Yona. I've just done my first school visit, and it was the best fun I've had in ages! I really hope this leads to great things for you - I'd love more of us SCBWIs to have the experience. Go for it!
