Tracy Ann Baines ~ Writer

Profile

About Me
Aspiring children's writer.

My first attempt at a children's novel, then named 'Pig-boy and the Quest for the Cinnamon Forest', made the Cornerstones Wowfactor longlist and received an Honorary Mention in SCBWI's 'Undiscovered Voices' anthology competition.

I've created characters and game scenarios for Blue Murder, a murder mystery game company.

With a degree in Theatre Design, I've worked in film for several years. Some of the big budget films include two James Bond films, the first Harry Potter, The Mummy, Elizabeth, Shakespeare in Love.
I've also worked on lower budget productions and some theatre work.
What are you working on at the moment?
Rewrite after fantastic agent feedback for an 8-12 historical fantasy.
YA Urban fantasy.
Sci-fi adventure for ages 7-9.
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
The Knife of Never Letting Go - Patrick Ness.
Loved it that much I emailed the author to tell him how wonderful I thought it was. My first time at being an author's groupie.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Keep trying, don't give up and be inspired.

Hi Tracy sorry for not getting back to you sooner,I'd love to help out with your blog,I've sent stuff off to publishers before and a lot of the comments are my work is too cartoony,I mainly work for Welsh publishers and the Welsh book council. My main influences are Quentin Blake,Gerald Scarfe and Ronald Searle,I then came up with a slightly different style which has now got me into larger publishers,my main aim was to submit my new work to the Big London publishers,Egmont have very kindly replied and have created a file of my work as have Oxford University press,Little tiger press,Gomer (Welsh publisher)Tracey Baxter who has also sent my stuff off to Igloo books. I Am also waiting to hear from Kid's at Randomhouse,Scholastic childrens books,Bloomsbury,Usborne,Pearson Education if one of those retains my work then I'll have to buy a very large hat and a gag for my mouth. Some of them do take a long time to reply, anyway fingers crossed. Also joining Scbwi has helped a lot, networking with people who have a great passion for writing and illustrating, and not taking any nonsense from people some of the comments I recieved when I first started were "how can I put this diplomatly"not very helpful, you have got to keep plugging away all the time.My next aim is the USA,hope that was some help if you need anything else don't hesitate getting in contact,diolch......................Eric
