Hi there. My interview with Imogen Cooper of the Golden Egg Academy now out in Words & Pictures. Very sorry if you're here to read the rest of it. I'll upload it as soon as I can. How to Hook an Agent by Julia Churchill of The Greenhouse Agency and What Publishers Want from Ali Dougal, commissioning editor at Egmont, are still below my profile. Hope they help.

Profile

About Me
I'm a journalist (ex-Reuters foreign correspondent, now a freelance sub-editor) living in deepest rural Devon with my lovely family. Besides reading and writing lots, I walk our Australian sheep dog on the nearby coast path and dream about restoring our once-teeming wildlife garden from the ravages of said dog.
What are you working on at the moment?
I'm experimenting with new genres/styles at Bath Spa, where I'm on the MA in Writing for Young People (great people, great place) and hope to develop a gritty love story set in Africa as the main manuscipt for the course.
If you had to recommend just one children's book you've read in the last year, what would it be?
Patrick Ness's A Monster Calls: simple, powerful, compelling
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Experiment. Re-vision. Open up. And remember to enjoy it!

NOTES AND QUOTES FROM THE ‘HATCHING’ OF GOLDEN EGG ACADEMY

At the official ‘hatching’ of the Golden Egg Academy in Bath last weekend, three children’s writers gave a first taste of what it’s like working on their manuscripts with senior Chicken House editor Imogen Cooper and her team - a team that now includes Beverley Birch, who retires this year as Hodder Children’s Book’s senior commissioning editor, as well as Christine O’Brien and Vanessa Harbour. Guest speaker Barry Cunningham, managing director of Chicken House Publishing and…

Ali Dougal kindly stepped in for Leah Thaxton, also of Egmont. Ali is one of an editorial team of four, covering the market from 5+ to YA and crossover fiction. How to Hook an Agent by Julia Churchill, Greenhouse Literary Agency

Julia Churchill, Greenhouse Literary Agency, and Ali Dougal, commissioning editor at Egmont, London Professional Series Book Camp, Mar 6th, 2012

Julia gave a great talk on Tuesday, with advice on how to find an agent, what they want in query letters and the job agents do for their authors. Below are edited highlights. For more about Julia and the Greenhouse, see her website or the recent interview by Nicky Schmidt. Ali Dougal’s excellent contribution and…

Both blog posts were really useful, I thought. Looks like you got a fair few reads too! To get even more interest, you'd need to post the link on Yahoo, Facebook and/or Twitter, or see if the others who blogged on the same event will link to you. What about posting the link to your page on the Ning SW group too, for Southwesterners who couldn't make the events?

Rowena, there's a group (on the home page under Groups) called Ning Help where you can ask questions about how it works if you're not sure. Re. blogging, if you look (on the home page) under 'Need To Know' you'll see some blogs - some people just link to an external site while others use their profile page blog. It's quite easy to use.

Usually when there's an event of the kind you're thinking of writing up, several people will cover it and then let people know about it via the Yahoo Group and Facebook as well as here. People who can't get to London events are always very grateful!

Also, if you 'friend' one of the event organisers on here, you can send them a direct message to ask about protocol.

Hi Rowena, when you send a friend request the message only comes through as an email - so you are doing ok! Good luck with your book, it sounds very good.

Hi Rowena, welcome to SCBWI and SW SCBWI! I look forward to meeting you - watch the SW group for dates. We'll be having another Write-In soon: we're a small but lovely group!

Your books sound fascinating!
