This is hard. I get a number of people finding my website and asking if I'll give an opinion on their work - usually a 3000+ word moralising text for an unpublishable picture book. I usually tell them that I am not sure what publishers are printin…

I write and occasionally illiustrate for children and adults. I'm still a British Citizen though I live in Australia, where I'm Coordinator of SCBWI Queensland. Ideally, I'd like to spend half my time in each country. I'm also on the committee of the Children's Book Council of Australia and involved with Book Links Queensland Inc., which is trying to develop a Children's Literature Centre similar to the Seven Stories Centre in Newcastle.

I hope I can be helpful here.

What are you working on at the moment?
Three picture books (2 just about to be sent out with illos - the pictures above are in one of them), two NF's and a YA that I can see will take me a lot lot longer than I'd like it to.
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
Mending Lucile by Jennifer Poulter, illustrated by Sarah Davis, published by Lothian 2008. You'll find it on a net search, along with Sarah's blog on producing the illos. It's a wonderful and beautifully illustrated story about recovery from separation from or loss of a parent. Both SCBWI members!
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Networking works! I asked an editor on www.jacketflap.com for 'friendship' and along with acceptance was asked if I'd be interested in a project - now completed. The book will hopefully come out worldwide in 2009.'

Here are a couple of old ones. The calligraphy book was published in the UK and NZ by Unwin Hyman/HarperCollins as 'A Manual of Calligraphy'.

Notes from the 2006 SCBWI International Conference in Sydney

Hope something here might help someone:

If writing / illustrating alphabet books, they must have a theme - like Australian wildlife, or skulls, or aeroplanes.

Susan Sherman, Art Director of Charlesbridge Books US - a smallish publisher that has a staff of 9 - said that for children's books, their main market is libraries. The expected shelf life of a book in a store is 1 - 2 years. They receive an average of 200 unsolicited mss per month, plus 100 solicited / from agents per month, plus 10 art… Continue

Are you being read?

Though British and a SCBWI member, I live in Australia where I'm Coordinator of the SCBWI Queensland Chapter. I look forward to sharing as much as possible while the rules of being allowed here are clarified. At the SCBWI International Conference in Sydney, an editor overheard a casual conversation I was having, tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Peter, you write well!" This was a surprise, as I had never sent anything to them.
If you've not set up a page on… Continue

Thanks for your reply. My hubby and I are wading our way through the nightmare that is the Australian visa system. And we're not winning! Looks like I would have to be the main applicant. Me, a writer! Don't suppose you happen to know anyone involved in television drama? Long shot, I know :)

Thanks for your message Peter, you are the first person on my wall :)
That's a lot of crazy coincidences, and to add to them a bit, although not in such an impressive way, I used to live in York and my boyfriend lives in Thornaby :)

I love York, but on a snowy day like today I can defiantly say I fancy a bit of the Australian weather.

I have been racking my brains to think of a strange coincidence I can share with you, and I have finally managed to think of one:

Once-upon-a-time I joined a friendly sounding society for children's writers and illustrators. I set up my account, and the very first comment I received was from a man living in Australia who used to live near my very own home town...

Sorry but that's the best I can do right now!

Hi Peter, I love the Foshy Fish!
Yes I'm working with Susan in a manner of speaking, she's delegated the art direction to designer Diane Early and editor Yolanda Leroy, who are both great to work with. I've been ill with flu for the past 2 weeks so the project is way beyond deadline, lots of catching up to do!
