Thanks Holly, it's back out with another publisher, and that always feels like a relief, at least it has a chance whilst it's on someone's desk. Good luck placing yours too. Paul.

But it's nice to get the encouragement! I got my 6-8 yr old story back early too...it was a thanks, but no thanks and 'we like your writing but' and then they waffled on about the recession (I think it's a new by-line). Keep plugging away, someone w…

About Me
Freelance illustrator running Hot Frog Graphics illustration studio.
Lives with wife Janet in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
What are you working on at the moment?
Children's boxed game, a range of greetings cards and the germ of an idea for my next PB
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
Just read in detail The quiet woman and the noisy dog by Sue Eves, much appreciated.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Talent is important but persistence is necessary too, and don't cut corners.

A spread from the dummy of my new picture book featuring Bug Belly - a countdown book.

Quick turnaround

Bug Belly came home at the weekend! Unannounced, in a jif bag. Not that I wasn't happy to see him back here, it's just that he came with a rejection letter attached from Walker books.
There were some strong words of encouragement and so I took their advice and sent him off to the next publisher. He was only in the studio for one working day, so that's not a bad pit stop really.
This time I might send off clones to other publishers at the same time.
Ho hum.

Submission

Well, it's done!
Bug Belly is currently somewhere in the deepest cellars of Walker books.
Actually it should be with the picture editor as I sent it direct and hopefully it has skipped the slushpile.
Fingers crossed for the long wait.

Friday 22nd May.

Hi Paul, only just found your note. Yes, I will go to Winchester again this year, so better fill in the form and email Chrissie to check I can have her other room. I asked her to hold it for me when I said goodbye last November, so hopefully she has done.

Hi Paul, sending you lots of luck with Bug Belly, you will have to let me know how it gets on at Little Tiger Press. Woppapotamus is such a brilliant name for a book, looking forward to seeing more of your illustrations. I'm currently listening to Harry Potter read by Steven Fry with a bit of Kings of Leon and City and Colour when I feel like singing along. It's great to be able to do work that allows you freedom to listen to things at the same time.
Hope you have fun at Winchester. Mary

Hi Paul, thank you for the congratulations. Unfortunatly I can't afford to go to Winchester this year as I'm currently saving up for a car and rent and all sorts. You will have to tell me how it all goes. Hopefully things will be more settled next year. How are things with you? Mary

Thanks for your kind words, you know what its like when you get so many knock backs, its hard to see your work with fresh eyes. Are you going to the conference this year, thinks its on anyway, I'm hoping to. Would like more than a yearly crit really, but the local group is a way away and it was suggested I start one, perhaps I should, never seem to have time to think though. Just about to sit and look at the competition details now, who knows I might produce something in the next week!

Hi, From Norfolk to Wiltshire. Had load of extra hassle on top of move too. Nearly there with unpacking. Not felt inspired at all recently I'm afraid, lost my confidence a bit really. Hope it comes back. Good luck with your submission.

Hi Paul! How are things with you? i have just moved and not produced any new work for months, although i want to enter the Waterstones/Macmillan comp. Only a couple more weeks to go tho, kids round my ankles the whole time not making it very easy either. Looking forward to life settling down and becoming normal again. Hope all good with you.

Hi Paul
I'm trained in art, have a degree in Theatre design, but just concentrate on the writing aspect of kids books.
Your graphics really jumped out at me - absolutely adore the colours and vibrancy of your work, so had to comment.
