About Me
I'm 37 and currently unpublished (but I hope not for long...). I've been writing in various genres ever since university, but I've only really got serious about writing in the last five years. I have two daughters aged 5 and 9, who aren't allowed to read any of my stuff yet because they still get scared by Disney movies (!)
What are you working on at the moment?
A series of horror novels for readers aged 10+.
The first volume, a lightning-paced zombie thriller called "Back from the Dead" has been selected for the Undiscovered Voices 2010 anthology. Which is cool.

I'm also one of the administrators of the 8+ Series Fiction eCritique group.
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
The New Brighton Archeological Society (Book One) by Mark Andrew Smith and Matthew Weldon.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
That agents are nice people and there's no reason to be scared of them.

I Write Anywhere

It's Christmas and what better way to celebrate than by murdering a much-loved poem? So, with profuse apologies to Eleanor Farjeon, here goes. You may want to look away now...

I write anywhere:
Kitchen table, office chair,
Planes and buses, moving cars,
On the top of hotel bars,
In queues and cafes, bathroom stall.
(but on a notepad, not the wall)

I have no shed or studio,
Or anywhere that I can go,
To hide awa… Continue

Training Wreck

I have a chip on my shoulder about creative writing training. In fact, I'm beginning to wonder if it's actually a phobia. I've always been suspicious of the "right way" to go about writing a book and have often taken a deliberately wilful route through the maze. I guess this is called "making my own mistakes", although sometimes it feels like winding up the window and not asking for directions, even though my wife is shouting at me and threatening divorce.

Somebody lent me a copy of How to WContinue

Metaphorically Speaking

I've found myself thinking a lot this week about what I enjoy about writing, often followed by an excess of sighing and "Oh why do I do it?" type statements to anyone in range. I spent hours and hours doing re-plotting yesterday and I think that is one of those things I do enjoy, the moment that the plot suddenly snaps into place. But more than that, the thing I find really satisfying is crafting the perfect metaphor. I've noticed them creeping into my blog posts recently and I hope that hasn't… Continue

Revisionism

So, I met with an agent last week. Note the lack of fanfare, although I did my best to work myself up about it beforehand. We sat down for an hour and a half, discussed Back from the Dead in detail and she thoroughly resisted the urge to sign me up until she's seen another draft. Which is fair comment, because let me tell you kids, I have a lot of work to do.

On the upside: my voice, setting, characters and humour are all great. The downside? My plot stinks. Well, not stinks perhaps, but it cer… Continue

My Brain Hurts!

And let me tell you, when all you are is a brain in a jar, that's a major problem!

Joking aside, I've just come back from the Winchester conference and there are so many writing ideas in my head that I'm seriously worried that some will leak out. It was such a liberating experience to talk about my book with likeminded people and as anyone who met me can testify, I talked about it a LOT! For me, that has really re-affirmed my self belief in Back from the Dead and the series that will hopefully… Continue

I so agree with you Nick. I started my writing career by reading a how-to book by Evan Marshall. Now he writes (and represents) US whodunnits. But I used it to write an historical romance! So I ended up with something really tightly plotted and the…

i thnk meg is terrified this is going to eat into her procrastination time the way facebook tends to. agree with you - i too have a resistance maybe an embarrassment about studying the how-tos of writing. it's embarrassing to be seenw ith yolur how…

Wow - there's a lot of material here. Glad to see that Wyvern is continuing to grow - it's great to see you and the team making a success of something that could so easily have become vanity publishing. Keep it up!

Hi Nick, I feel your pain! I had an 8+ story of mine - partially written but invested in over several long years - reviewed by Steve Cole and he gave some fabulous feedback, but his overall view was I should start again and rewrite it completely for…

Well done for the positive feedback though - voice, characters, setting etc! Sounds like the agent found a lot to like in your book, even if she thought it needed more work. Good luck with the re-write, All best, Emily

Thanks - I've never been called motivational before! Most of the time I'm just trying to motivate myself... I have to say that I'm already finding some interesting layers to the story by rewriting it - still a little hard for me to see where it's a…

Hi Nick Dude - I love your own advice to yourself and admire you greatly for it. Excellent outlook! Whenever I get low I think about Patrick Rothfuss, fantastic fantasy author from the States who worked on his debut novel for 14 years, 14 differen…

My thoughts are with you Nick! I've been through this particular dilemma twice now. I re-wrote the first novel on a professional reader's advice so that it had more 'texture' ie lots more description and another 25k words!, only to get it slammed ag…

Candy, the eclairs were actually too small for human eyes and had to be eaten under an electron microscope. (or maybe I had them at lunch on Saturday - chocolate ones with chocolate filling and coffee ones with coffee filling)

where? where were the world's tiniest chocolate eclairs?

Sorry Jeannette, didn't mean to make you feel bad - think of how much money you saved by not going! Maybe you should offer to arrange the conference next year so you can choose when it's held ;-)

Now you're making re feel really sad that I couldn't get there this year and even more determined to make it next. But I have a horrid feeling that it won't work if it's the same weekend as this year. Maybe I should just try to organise a Christmas…
