Miriam Halahmy : Welcome to my page!

Profile

About Me
I am currently writing Y.A. fiction, but have also published a novel for adults and two books of poetry. I have a cycle of three novels coming out with Meadowside Books, 2011-2012.
HIDDEN, (March 2011), the first novel in the cycle, all set on Hayling Island, has been very well reviewed : "Deserves the widest audience," Nick Tucker; "A book to counter bigotry" Nicolette Jones; "Authentic" Mary Hoffman; "Messages of justice and integrity" The Observer, "Gives you so much to discuss" Adele Geras.
HIDDEN was Sunday Times Children's Book of the Week in April, nominated for The People's Prize in March and longlisted for the Southern Schools Book Award in June.
Next two titles : ILLEGAL, March 2012; STUFFED, October 2012.
What are you working on at the moment?
Just completing edits of ILLEGAL. About to start editing STUFFED.
But I've also started a new novel : my fifth!
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
ROOM by Emma Donoghue. Although not a children's novel it is told in the voice of a five year old boy who has spent his life in a garden shed with his mother, locked up by a maniac. The most extraordinary and absorbing book I have read in a long while.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Keep writing and keep reading. It is the only real advice I can ever give myself and anyone else who wants to be a writer. There is no other way!

Miriam Halahmy : Writing on The Edge

This year I decided to move on from blogging on my own to blogging with other writers. I have been part of the enormously successful ABBA blog for nearly two years. So I was delighted when Sarah Grant asked me to join a new initiative : The Edge. We are a group of 8 published writers, all in SCWBI, who blog every Friday and organise events for groups of us to promote our books.

We are sending a group to the Kid's Lit Quiz this autumn in Herts and we will be running a panel event at the SCWBI Conference. Being part of a group of such talented authors has given my new novel, HIDDEN, an enormous boost. The Edge has been invited to guest blog on several well known blogs and we have festivals around the country beginning to show interest.

Anthony Gormley inspires me to write. What makes you write?

I've just posted on The Edge blog about visiting Crosby beach last weekend and see Anthony  Gormley's amazing iron men marching out to sea. Totally inspiring. Have a read and do leave me a comment.

The song only came about because of your beautiful poem Miriam. It would be wonderful to think that neither of us should ever again have to write about, or compose music about such tragic situations. In the meantime, we can only hope and pray that the world will one day be able to live together in harmony.x

Just opened my copy of Writers' Forum magazine & there you were! Great interview. Made me think about cross checking a few of my 'facts' for story set in past. Thanks!

Hooray - Page of the Day! Interesting to read about your take on 'Room'. My writing class chose it as a book to review a few terms ago - and it split us completely in two as a group. Never known such a heated discussion!
