Excerpt from I Wanna Dog, Chapter Two. Step one - Charlie is persuading his parents to get him a dog.

Another failure, thought Charlie, but he knew he had a killer fact to finish off with. He fished in his jeans pocket and took out a crumpled piece of paper.
“Do you want to hear something else very interesting, Dad?”
“Is it about dogs?”
“Not at first.” He spread the paper out in front of him, smoothing the creases.
Dad paused, with a fork full of spaghetti in front of his mouth. “Oh, go on then.”
Charlie read out, “‘An old woman in Woop Woop, near Sydney,’” he looked across the table at his dad. “That’s Australia.”
“Yes, Charlie. I know where Sydney is. Get on with it.”
He started again. “An old woman in Woop Woop, near Sydney was attacked by a kangaroo. Kangaroos can grow to six feet tall and a kick can be fatal.”
Charlie put on a very bad Australian accent.
“‘It was my birthday and I was just coming out of the dunny when the roo came straight at me,” said Mrs Sheila Downby. “Knocked me on my butt. Strewth, I thought, I’m a gonner here, right enough. It would have kicked me to death if it hadn’t been for my little Brucy. That bonzer dog came tearing out of the house and chased the boomer off. I reckon that mutt saved my life. We’re having a big Barbie at the boozer to celebrate. I’m eighty six, and I’ve still got all me own teeth, you know.’”
Mum looked out of the kitchen window, trying not to laugh.
Dad tried not to laugh too but failed and almost choked on his spaghetti. “Charlie, you are not going to be attacked by a kangaroo!”
Charlie looked serious. “What if we go to the zoo, Dad?”
“You can’t take a dog to the zoo!”
“But it’s an animal.”
“That’s enough,” said Mum, taking his empty plate. “It’s late. Go to bed, Charlie.”
“But-”
Dad joined in. “Bed.”
As he washed his face, brushed his teeth and pulled on his Superman pyjamas Charlie thought about his next move. Did the internet hold the answer? Could he find more facts, cuter dogs? He got into bed and stared up at the glow in the dark stars, wondering if there was a website called www.how2getadog.co.uk.
Something was digging into him. He reached behind his back and pulled his belt out. He was just about to drop it onto the floor, when inspiration hit him like an apple on the head.
“Of course!”
He sat up, gripping the belt.
“That’s a brilliant idea.”

About Me
I like thinking 'what if' and the only way to keep these 'what if's' under control is to write about them. So I write fiction for children because I can let my 'what if's' go mad.
I write full time as if I'm on the Hero's Journey. I've had the inciting incident (I've read books), I've convinced myself 'I am the only one' (I have high self esteem issues) and I am now throttling the threshold guardians of ignorance and ineptitude. I hope to go through the first doorway and into the story one day soon. Fingers crossed.
Here's a serious bit - I was a primary school teacher and I have had a reading scheme - Action Words- published. The website is www.actionwords.co.uk
I've brought up two children to adulthood (sort of) and am lucky enough to have a lovely husband who believes in me.
What are you working on at the moment?
I'm working on draft 10 of Gurner Gobbit and The Bloodcurdling Bug Eyed Jawbreaker. It's based on the excellent grown up advice - if you pull your face like that it will stick. I thought it was finished but the stakes weren't high enough so it's getting another treatment.
I'm also writing a romantic comedy between a boy and two dogs called -I Wanna Dog. It's half done.
And I've just started on A-BRA-CADA-BRA a tale of a flat chested teenager who buys a magic bra to get the boy of her dreams. Unfortunately it won't come off and increases her bust size every time she answers a question correctly in class. And there's a big exam coming up which she must pass!
At the same time I meet once a week to work on a film script with Katherine (illustrator daughter, on here too) called The Princess Trials. A sort of xfactor meets the Frog Prince.
I have an idea for a teen fantasy novel too but that is in the early planning stage.
And sometimes I sleep!
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
I know this isn't a book from this year but I have just discovered Wolves in the Walls and I think it is fantastic.
I have just read all the Twilight books and thought the mix of teen romance with blood and guts was a good idea and found it to be mostly a page turner. She surprised me a few times too which is always good.
The Knife of Never Letting go was good too.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
I read The Writer's Journey by Christopher Volger and applied the hero's journey to both of my plots. It showed up the problem areas and they are much stronger plots now. He also highlights character polarity and this has made the action more dynamic and strengthened the characters voices. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Hi Gail, Nice to have another scribbler. We should be having another York meeting soon, it's usually the first Sunday every other month, so I think It should be first one in July, if you want to come along. Is that right Addy? I know you can't come…

Hi Maureen
I'm afraid not, I'm away this weekend, visiting relatives...(in-laws, say no more!) Shame though, would have been nice to meet before the Retreat & York is such a lovely place.
Have fun though!

It's a mystery, for sure. Have you tried contacting BT/Yahoo for advice? By the way - I love texting!

I wouldn't have thought that it was nearly finished mattered - it's still a WIP.
2500 words is the max word count.
You might have a point about Jawbreaker - as much as I love it I think it's very Britccentric. I don't know though - trust your instincts.
The email business is weird - all the other emails I've been getting come through in English.
