I haven't blogged here for ages. I've been busy with www.thefuneverse.com, co-moderating Picturebook Too! our SCBWI ecrit group, and my various writing projects, not to mention Exeter Write-Ins and Socials: …

A Fine (Book Cover) Romance

I found these original 1960's Mills & Boon romances in a junk shop, and loved the cover designs.

They seemed perfect to post on Valentine's…

Animal Magnetism

I can always visualise characters clearly when I'm writing: they roam around my imagination like film stars in their own movie. There are all sorts of creative ways to extend your character work.

Acting techniques, sketching characters, snapping them, even constructing them - perhaps using masks,…

About Me
Any day that isn't spent writing, reading, with family and friends, or on the beach is a wasted day! This remains true in 2013.

I am currently joint coordinator for the SCBWI-BI SW network with Ellen Renner, coordinating the SW SCBWI Ning group, co-admin for SCBWI-BI picturebook e-critique group PB Too and the Poetry e-crit group, now called 'funEverse'. You can leave messages for me below, or send a direct message if you want to contact me about something related to the SW network, or the e-crit groups (*Both of these e-crit groups are closed to new members.) Expect to wait up to a couple of weeks for a reply at the moment!
What are you working on at the moment?
A middle grade novel, 2 new ideas, and picture book texts.
I was highly commended in two categories in the 2011 Winchester Writers Conference competitions: Little Tiger Press for children 4-6, and for the Greenhouse, 8-12, and again in 2012, commended and highly commended in the same categories.
If you had to recommend just one children's book you've read in the last year, what would it be?
I can't answer this question - but books with the re-readability factor are my favourites, such as Spindle's End (Robin McKinley), and classics like the Narnia series, and Alan Garner's books. I love a compelling series like Harry Potter.
Janet Foxley's Muncle Trogg - fab! And Pat Walsh's wonderful Crowfield Curse .. I also liked Dead Man's Cove by Lauren St John, and just read Lucy Jones' scary Nightmare Factory!

My favourite picturebook of all time is Helen Cooper's 'The Baby Who Wouldn't Go To Bed.' Also adore 'Harry The Dirty Dog' by Gene Zion and Margaret Bloy Graham and love Edward Ardizzone.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Turn off the time-sucking INTERNETZ .. so see you later!

Oh - and one quick question: I see you're a co-ordinator for the picture book critique group. I don't suppose you have any idea how big the waiting list is for it? Thanks
