About Me
I worked for seven years in the children's publishing industry in the United States, helping to produce winners of the Coretta Scott King Award and American Library Association Notable Book selections, amongst others. I am now a freelance children's book specialist and I teach creative writing at the National Centre for Research in Children's Literature (NCRCL) at Roehampton University in London. Recent freelance clients have been long- and short-listed for the Chicken House Award, been signed to an agent, and had their work requested by a commissioning editor at OUP. I offer mentoring services and also help people who are self publishing. In my spare time, I am working on my own writing, particularly of YA fiction.
What are you working on at the moment?
I teach creative writing for young readers on an on-going basis (writing children's books) at Roehampton University. In my freelance work I am editing children's books for Nigerian publisher Cassava Press, mentoring some authors regularly, and critiquing a variety of manuscripts. My new resolution is to spend more time on my own writing as well - particularly a YA novel about a girl taking a cross-country road trip with her mother and her mother's new female partner.
If you had to recommend just one children's book you've read in the last year, what would it be?
Anything by Patrick Ness, though I haven't yet read A Monster Calls.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Perseverance can pay off!

End of summer picture book MS critique sale

OK, so I know summer isn't over yet, but my daughter is off to her first day of school (ever) tomorrow. This means I will have much more time available - after I finish marking MA dissertations over the coming week. And it also means that aspiring writers with children everywhere can now turn their attention back to perfecting their work.

So, I've decided to offer an end of summer sale. Get 10% off a picture book manuscript critique if…

An interview with Client Wendy Hue on Self Publishing

I have worked with Wendy Hue on several manuscripts, and gave her editorial feedback on two drafts of her recent self-published book, Tópé Arrives. I have always been impressed with how passionate and articulate Wendy is. You will see from the interview below how hard she has worked to develop, and ultimately self publish, her novel after having doors closed on her from the publishing…

TRADITIONAL TALES WITH KEVIN CROSSLEY-HOLLAND at Roehampton University, Digby Stuart College

Today, stories from many cultures have become part of a widening heritage available to children. Through reading, retelling and discussion, this hands-on seminar willgive participants the opportunity to explore the structure and language of these stories and to consider…See More
