About Me
I've been a writer and illustrator of childrens' comics (mainly Dandy, Beano) all my career, worked in childrens' TV as both illustrator and modelmaker, also illustrated novel 'The Trust' and history books 'Time Tram Dundee' and 'Time Tug Hartlepool'.
Last year I qualified as a teacher and as a visiting lecturer teach visual communication at both Dundee and Sunderland Universities, and do many primary school visits, workshops and projects in both Dundee and Hartlepool, particularly working with special needs kids.
I am a mentor and give art workshops at an after school drop-in with youngsters at 'Families First- R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Project,' and a weekly model-making session with the Hartlepool Dyspraxia group.
I still do illustration and when time permits work on my own projects.
I love (almost) every minute of it!
What are you working on at the moment?
A Hartlepool based comic ,'Monkey Crew' created in workshops with young people to highlight the problems facing young teens in today's urban society.
Launched 'Time Tug' in June,a local history book/teaching aid for primary children created through storytelling workshops on the 'Wingfield Castle' paddle steamer at the Museum of Hartlepool.
Launched 'Whar's Wattie?' in September, a primary teaching aid commissioned by Dundee College.
Gave a talk in June at the Dundee Literary Festival's Comicon on working for D.C. Thomson's 'Starblazer' which has just celebrated its 30th anniversary with an exhibition at Dundee Uni.
Got well sunburned doing a two-day stint drawing portraits at Hartlepool's Dockfest on the 4th and 5th Julyfollwed by an all-day children's drawing workshop at Hartlepool Art Gallery on July 30.
Spent a happy Halloween on HMS Trincomalee drawing portraits at Hartlepool's Historic Quay 'SpooQuay' event.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
To quote William Goldman (writing about Hollywood):
"Nobody knows anything!"
Its an endlessly fascinating process and most of us are in it because we can't not be in it.

Hi Keith,
Thanks for the welcome! It's been about seven months since I've been to any of the NE events and it will probably be at least another seven or so before I get back, but hope to meet you sometime.
Best wishes,
Rebecca

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the lovely comment you left me, and welcome to SCBWI :) I got very excited that someone who worked on the beano thought I was good! My brother used to get that comic every week, and I used to steal it away once he had read it. If it’s not too cheeky would you mind me asking why you think they are good? I am just getting started with illustration, and I am trying to identify my strengths and weakness so I can improve.

I had a little nosey on the net to see if I could find any of your book illustrations, but I was struggling to find any. I did find a picture of you on a council website looking very smiley though!

Best wishes,
Katherine

Hi Keith.
Welcome to Scoobie.
