- About Me
- I like asking 'what if' and developing back stories for my characters. I like quirkiness, monsters, and laughing. One day I would love to go into a book shop and be able to say 'I did that!’
I have a degree in Creative Imaging from Huddersfield University. The course was mainly focused on producing advertising campaigns, but also included modules in typography, page layout design, and marketing. After completing my degree, and following a short stint as a junior buyer, I became a Training Manager at a learning centre that delivered Learndirect courses.
I am now developing my portfolio, and working towards becoming a children's writer, and illustrator. If anyone has any comments, or words of advice I would be very happy to hear from you.
- What are you working on at the moment?
- Building up my portfolio, and working on several short stories. I have also enrolled on a Children's Illustration course with the London Art College.
- If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
- Wolves by Emily Gravett, I know it hasn't been published this year, but its fab, and I have only just discovered it :)
- What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
- This is such an ongoing process that its hard to say. I think it is probably to try and find my own way of doing things, without getting too overwhelmed and influenced by some of the wonderful work that is out there.

Just thought I would say hello - I saw you live in Saltburn, which is where I was born back in 1969 :-) We lived in Marske, my Dad grew up there and my Great Aunt still lives there. My late Gran used to live in Thornaby, which is where my Mum grew up. We moved to Harrogate, then as an adult I moved to London, and I'm now in Cornwall with my husband and daughters - it's nice to be near the Ocean again :-)
Anyway - excuse the log post - just wanted to say - if you want to get going as an illustrator as soon as possible, get yourself a website and do a bit of web advertising - the Association of Illustrators portfolio is amazing value for money and bring in excellent commissions. Send some samples to the Oxford or Cambridge University Presses as they are always looking for new illustrators and it's a great way to cut your teeth so to speak :-)
