About Me
I love picture books. The way that words and pictures work together, while leaving a gap for the readers imagination is fascinating. I love characters that look like they are up to no good, with a bit of humor thrown in for good measure. I must also confess to having a bit of a soft spot for chubby smelly pirates.

I have been lucky enough to meet several amazing authors and illustrators via SCBWI including the legendary Shaun Tan at Seven Stories in Newcastle. Meeting these people has been so inspiring, and always makes me want to rush back home to the drawing board.

I have a degree in Creative Imaging from Huddersfield University. The course was mainly focused on producing advertising campaigns, but also included modules in typography, page layout design, and marketing. I'm working as a teaching assistant, so I can get closer to my target audience!
What are you working on at the moment?
My portfolio. I'm constantly re-doing it and hope to send it out soon.

I am a member of the funEverse, check out our funny poems at www.thefuneverse.com/
If you had to recommend just one children's book you've read in the last year, what would it be?
Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers is lovely. The relationship between the boy and the penguin is established so beautifully.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
I work better when I am part of a team! I have been learning so much recently, which has been great fun. Attending SCBWI events and sharing work and knowledge is incredibly helpful and feedback from the North East Scoobie gang has been invaluable.

My first Notes From the Slushpile appearance

I have recently collaborated with Maureen for my first notesfromtheslushpile blog post titled: Ready to Publish? Are you? Really?  Maureen is able to explain the principles of structure in a clear and fun way, so I was very happy to be asked to illustrate the post with a smelly pirate.…

Thanks Katherine, I'm glad you enjoyed it, and as you now know, as an amiable, I really mean that! The Big Pants will definitely make an appearance next time, I promise!

Well I spotted your reply pretty quickly, so thanks.

I'm thinking about a couple of new App books based around Monsters and Pirates, but its early stages and there are just loads of sketches that I need to start formulating into a plan.

Being in total control of these stories/books etc is really great fun and it has pushed my 2 'real' book ideas to the back of my mind. I do still intend to pursue getting them published but at the moment there are more instant results (if you call 2 months instant) from working on these ITBooks.

On the whole, somewhere like 97% of the feedback has been really good but every so often I get a comment posted on how much they dislike the book, and that really bugs me.

Keep in touch and let me know what you;re up to.

Say hi to mum.

Paul. x
