About Me
Having had my 18 year long freelance illustration career in children's books happily interrupted by the birth of my son. (Which ended on a high. I received first prize from the English Association and was shortlisted for The Royal Society prize for a children's science book, great fun.)
I decided it was high time for a change and so have embarked on a mission to write and illustrate my own books. And am loving it...
What are you working on at the moment?
Since my son started school this September I have been enjoying writing up a few picture book ideas, on various themes, which I am hoping to develop and submit to publishers eventually.
If you had to recommend just one children's book you've read in the last year, what would it be?
Undoubtedly The Troll, especially for the drawings by Dave Roberts, what an illustrator!
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
As Shoo Rayner says wisely on his website, in not so many words (apols to Shoo!). Get your bum sat down on a seat and...write.

Agents

Soon I'd like to start  approaching agents to find one to represent me, any recommendations or advice regarding this would be most welcome. (My stories, which i hope to illustrate too, will be picture books.)

Thanks

Kate

Approaching Publishers

Hello Author/Illustrators

As an author /illustrator about to approach publishers with your story ideas, how much preparation of the drawings do you do, especially if you have worked for the publisher previously and they know you and your work?  I have had conflicting advice.  Character sketches, thumbnail sketches,  a few spreads and a cover, a dummy book, or all of these!?  I have four stories I'd like to start sending  out to warm contacts and have only completed so far a few…

Approaching Agents and Electronic Marketing

Hello everyone

I'm  just starting to approach publishers and agents with four picture book ideas. I'm well used to approaching publishers as an illustrator, but the writer bit is new to me.

Any help or advice on that score would be gratefully received.  I wonder if anyone might be able to help, or point me in the right direction please?

Also advice needed on marketing yourself electronically: on websites, blogs, twitter, etc, I haven't got much  of a…

Hi Kate, And you sent me some nibs, which I still use! I've always loved your drawings and I'm sure you'll have much success approaching publishers. By the way, if you're interested, there's another SCBWI group for writers and illustrators of picture books, where texts and images can be shown and discussed. It's always interesting to get other practitioner's viewpoints, and if you're unsure about a particular aspect of a project, you might find it useful before submitting stuff to publishers.

Best wishes,

Mike.

Welcome to SCBWI, Kate!  Great to have you here.  And Shoo Rayner's advice sounds pretty much right on the money.
