About Me
By day I'm a Graphic Designer, by night I feed my addiction by Writing Fantasy for the ages of 9 and above. I am a hopeless dreamer, who loves to submerge herself inside the head of an eleven year old. A place where everything is possible and anything goes!
What are you working on at the moment?
Series Novel, 9+ (Which I think, I will be working on FOREVER!
if I don't tame that critical tiger!!!)
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
To keep it simple! Forget trying to be clever with words and keep to the point.
You can see samples of my work on our SCBWI North West, website:
www.afewofmyfavouritethings.co.uk, or visit my own site at:

See you there!

So sorry! Wanted to do your story by dinner but kept getting interrupted and had to go out at dinner time and didn't get a chance to let you know I would be delayed. Hope you weren't on too many hot coals! I'm back to it now and you should have it by bed time.

Hi Karen, It's just a drop in at Elpiano for a couple of hours in the afternoon. It's a small group and Addy usually reports back on any events she has attended or we have a chat about what we are up to and help out if anyone is stuck on anything. People are writing a range of stuff. One lady is doing school plays, another picture books and another funny stuff for 7 to 9's. My daughter Katherine will probably be there too, she's doing pbs and illustrating. You would be very welcome. I'm just in the middle of doing your crit - don't panic.

Addy chairs the northern events on her own, I don't have any involvement. She's amazing - you should see her blog!

I was really impressed with the Cornerstones report, it was very detailed and pointed out lots of things to improve ranging from small to big. The reader was brilliant and could really spot where I'd got a bit bored or not tidied up something in a redraft (eg contradictions) and reconfirmed with me some major things - like it being too long (I am about to chop a huge section at the start) and problems with various characters, many are for the cull and some are going to be amalgamated. I think the reports are best if you know there's something wrong with the book but don't know what as you're too close to it. It's not for the fainthearted and sometimes you might disagree with little specifics and have other ideas how to fix things. They have also been great at being there and have offered to brainstorm any issues. When I've redrafted - which will take some time) I can send it to them again for a second appraisal as part of the original charge too.
Of course it does feel rather indulgent spending so much on myself, or my book, but if it means I can get it as good as it can be and hopefully sell it then it'll be worth it.

Ah well I'll see you in February then. I'm going to test out my first chapter but I'm planning a major redraft of my whole book this year following my Cornerstones report - I was really impressed - but I've not to start it for a month and spend the time mulling over ideas and solutions which luckily I've had lots of.
Glad you had a nice indulgent Christmas, me too!

I'm great thanks Karen! Are you going to the next critique group? Let me know if you'd like a lift. :)
