Studied illustration at Manchester, set up studio in London then skedaddled off to Japan for 21 years. Worked mainly in commercial illustration in the Far East, but also illustrated around 40 books to date, most for the Japanese and US markets. Now back in Blighty from 2008, ready to pick up where I left off.
What are you working on at the moment?
A picture book on Michelangelo's Statue of David for Charlesbridge (US) and a picture book of Jack & the Beanstalk for Fukuinkan Shoten (Japan).
If you had to recommend just one children's book you've read in the last year, what would it be?
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
doodling aimlessly in sketchbooks is like sowing acorns. Many may be eaten by squirrels or rot in the ground, but some will grow to ... oh my!

Thanks for the great Picture Book Basics article in Words & Pictures this month, John. Despite reading up on format a lot I still find myself getting in a muddle about it sometimes, so this was really helpful.
Sorry I haven't replied before; constant problems with my e-mails. I would love to join your group if its not too late. What else do I need to do to sign up? Love the photos of Yanaka sadly this is a world wide story of progress!
