Thanks. Going to post some work on here and blog spot too. I see you live in T Wells, I used to live in East Grinstead-grew up there. Have family in T Wells, love it there.

Fantastic news for you and good luck. Once you've learnt more about how this all works you must post some of your art work. Then I won't feel like I'm the only one!

Profile

About Me
I am an aspiring Illustrator. I am particularly interested in illustrating stories for children and recently attended the SCBWI conference in Winchester, which I just loved. I work in acrylics, oils, collage and photo montage and am particularly interested in European illustration.I have recently started writing which is exciting for me-I especially love being able to visualise how the images and text work together
What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I am working on two stories and their illustrations. Ivy-Beatrice and the Field of Poppies is about an evacuee in WW2, the second is simply called Tree. I am also working to publicise myself and contacting publishers, and building on my B and W work.
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
Miki by Stephen Mackey, published by Hodder. Absolutely stunning illustrations from an amazing artist.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
That I love it and must do it. And that I think I can write too.

Rita Borg came to the Winchester conference last year, she's a writer and she lives in Malta, she told me about the publisher looking for illustrators so I sent them some samples. It's very exciting, I might actually be a published illustrator. Eeek! Good luck with the blog x

Hey. I'm good thank you, how are you? New job is good fun, though I miss having free time to do more illustrating and writing. I've got three books to illustrate for a publisher in Malta which is amazing and all thanks to Rita Borg.
I live right next to the Gloucester and Sharpness canal, it runs alongside our house, we actually (my parents) have a canal boat at the bottom of the garden. It really is a lovely community, everyone is so friendly. We love watching all the boats, sometimes we get big tall ships coming through, always exciting. We're also over looked by a hill of sheep! Lots of story ideas.
I don't think you can change the position once posted unless you re-post them. I think. You can alter how many entries are on your screen by going into your blog dashboard then clicking settings and then formatting and it's the top option you can select how many are shown on the screen at one time. You can also change how frequently it archives things by choosing archive instead of formatting, which might make it easier to scroll through. The options are shown as tabs at the top of the screen, it's quite clear. Give me a shout if you get stuck.
Hope all my tips actually work! Have a good evening, Mary x

Hi Jo,
I posted my old wrok first but you don't have to. When you write a post you can add labels in the bottom right corner of the screen where you write and add pics etc. If you add labels that can identify the work like book jackets etc then you can publish a list of labels on your blog (see my themes section at top of my blog). To publish your list of labels just go into the layout section from your blog dashboard select add gadget, it automatically goes into basics, scroll down the list till you get to labels which will show you how your list of labels will look, you can give it a title etc. Once you're happy with the options it offers click save and then you can move the list around on the layout just by dragging it to where you want. I hope that works, let me know if I jumped a step or if you get lost.

I hope your little one enjoys nursery, wish her luck from me.
The sunshine is beautiful, I spent yesterday on a canal boat and got a little burnt but it was very relaxing.
Take care for now,

Mary

Hey,
I made the header in photoshop, it's 650x150 pixels and you just go into Layout from your blog dashboard then you see all the individual bits of your page, you click on the edit for the header bar and you can add a title, description, and then an image which you can use behind the title or instead of the title, which is what I did. Hope that helps.
You're right everyone has a different oppinion and different publishers want different things, you have to pick the right publisher for your work, I still haven't found the right one for mine.
I know what you mean about pressure too, I started out thinking I could make a career from my illustrations and I think I rushed into things, sent out work that wasn't very good etc. I'm going to take some time and improve a bit more then send out another batch of samples to my top five publishers. I will keep my fingers crossed for us both.

Hi Jo,
I can see spots! I like them a lot, really nice colours too. I think you're right about my backgrounds, I always tend to go for overly patterned back grounds, I should try not to! Thanks so much for the comments though. I love getting feedback. It's great that you got feedback from a publisher, it's awesome, I've only ever had rejections! I think you have to tkae waht they say with a pinch of salt because you work is distinctive and your mark-making is part of what makes it so individual. You could try using the same marks but keeping them more subtle maybe? Post some of your work on your blog and start getting people to pop by and leave comments, I started off entering Illustration Friday whilst at uni and people belonging to that were so helpful (http://illustrationfriday.com/).
Definitely refer people to your blog/ website, I started with just my blog and now I have both on my buisness card and as a signature at the end of my email, get your work seen by as many people as possible seems to be the best way. Let me know if you need anymore advice with teh blogging!
Chat to you soon x

Hi Jo, glad I could help. What's the name of your blog? let me know when you have it all set up, I can't wait to pop by and see your work again. Good luck with it and have fun x

Hi Jo, yay! welcome to the world of blogging! It's really simple to use. You just follow the instructions, make sure your images are small, 72dpi, and when you go to your blog dashboard, after you sign in, there's a new post option, click that and it goes through to a screen where you can type out what you want, give it a title etc and there are lots of icons there to change the font and add web links etc, there's an add picture one too. Hover over them with your mouse to find out which icon is which. So you just click on the add pictures and a screen pops up, you can search your computer for the right image and attach it (up to 5 at a time I think), choose the size and position for the picture and then click load and it does it all for you. Give me an email createdbythestar@hotmail.co.uk and I can give you further instructions etc. I hope that gets you started though x

Hi Jo, actually posted my Picture This work on my blog, you can see it at http://createdbythestar.blogspot.com/. The interview was with Quantum Publishing Ltd. I don't think the freelance work is anything official yet. I will just wait and see what happens when they email me and enjoy selling antique toys in the meantime! x

Hi Jo, it's a shame you didn't enter, but if you weren't happy with your work then you made the right decision. There will be other opportunities and I'm sure when you have more time you will settle down and get lots of work done and send some of your beautiful illustrations out into the world.
My interview went quite well, I didn't get a job in London but they'd like me to work freelance as an illustrator which I'm thrilled about. Also got a job working for a buisness that sells antique toys and collectables which I'm very excited about. Will let you know when I get round to posting my Picture This work on my blog, don't know where the time goes! x
