About Me
I live in a beautiful town in Southern England and spend most of my time either writing or reading books and stories for kids and young adults (when I'm not looking after the other half and the kids, that is). I've written two full length novels so far and am currently well into my third. I also write short stories and have had more publishing success with these. The first came out in May 2009 and there is another being published in an anthology this November.
What are you working on at the moment?
Nihilation, a teen fantasy with an eco message (that's not the usual one!) and its associated blog, an adult thriller set in Renaissance Italy and an assortment of reviews and features for the The Phantom Zone
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld - brilliant idea, superbly carried out and killer illustrations
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Make the characters real.

Another chapter of Nihilation now on the blog

    Hi all

For those few of you who might have been following my Nihilation blog, I've now posted Chapter Four. This one introduces the last of the main four characters (Nate, Jack, Polly and Magya), and the weirdest one, as Magya is not human.

I'd love to have your feedback. The TW crit group liked it, but they're all such nice people I'm not sure they'd be very tough on me. So come on. I can take it (I think)!

    Garen Ewing's The Rainbow Orchid

    Hi everyone

I met the delightful Garen Ewing on Tuesday to chat with him about his soon to be published book The Rainbow Orchid, plus comics, art, writing, and film. I couldn't have possibly written it all up, but I've distilled the essence of our conversation for your delight and delectation and had it posted to The Phantom Zone, along with some super pics that Garen supplied. Garen kindly gave… Continue

    Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

    Hi everyone

I've just had a short piece on Tim Burton's upcoming film of Alice in Wonderland posted on The Phantom Zone. This looks like being a real treat for all the fans of weird and surreal kids stuff. As if Carroll and Burton weren't enticing enough it's also coming from Disney - the same Disney that produced Coraline that is, not the sugar-coated cutesy one!

It's due for release next March. Can we wait?

Invasion of the Not Quite Dead

Here's something a little different. Yesterday I got to spend the best part of 3 hours with an up and coming young film director who's looking to fund a spoof zombie film independently, using Twitter, in particular, as a marketing tool. The article I wrote as a result of this meeting is now posted on The Phantom Zone, a new website set up and run by Barry Hutchison (of Invisible Fiends fame). If you're a nerdy type like me do check it out. And check… Continue

    Hi Jeannette,
Sorry, have been on an Arvon writing course this past week and have had no internet access!
It's brilliant that you have almost finished your book. I can't wait to read it. I'm afraid I don't know who Justine is. I did a search for her on google and the only thing that came up was a forum where other writers had received full manuscript requests from her also, so perhaps she is someone who used to work for them and has now left or something. http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118779
Anyway, good luck with your querying and let me know if anything exciting happens!

    Hi Jeannette,

I remember you! How are you? Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, am trying to get to grips with this ning thing lol. Hows your book going? I see you have some chapters posted in a blog so I will give it a read when I have some time. It sounds fantastic!
My book is going well thankyou. Have signed the contract with Darley and Anderson now so I am trying harder than ever to get it finished. Only about half way through though so lots more hard work to go...

    Hi Jeannette,
Yes there are still places for the fantasy workshop but the deadline has long past for submitting your work to Sara to get a critique. You would still be able to do the workshop and participate on the day- read out some work, participate in discussions and do writing excercises, but Sara wouldn't be able to give you a personal written critique at this stage. If you would still like to do it then email me at maureen@oakeley.freeserve.co.uk . We could do a reduced rate too considering. please let me know asap though- only one or two spots left. The alternate world you talked about in your other message seemed totally fine for the workshop as well.
Ok , hope to hear from you. - Maureen

Thanks for organizing this morning. It was lovely to meet you and Marianna. I will definitely be more on the ball for our April meeting. Hopefully Trish will join us then too. I've been percolating on the feedback you gave me and I've had a few ideas on where to go with Tootie already. So it works really well this critiquing lark!
Looking forward to reading the rest of your short too.

    Thanks again.

I'll e:mail you a little later - the school run beckons. I'm definitely interested but I won't be able to meet up on March 20th as my Hubby is leaving for Seville that day so I'll be driving to Gatwick when you're all having coffee but I'll be ready for the April meeting!

Hi Jeannette. It's great to find someone else from this neck of the woods because, as you said, we're rather thin on the ground. I've heard chatter that there might be a critique group starting in Tunbridge Wells for those of us who can't make the Canterbury meetings. Heard anything? Would you be interested?
