Profile

About Me
I am a writer of children's book by night and an editor of children's books by day, so I guess I sit on both sides of the fence . . .

I read the manuscripts that come across my desk, waiting to fall in love, and I make those hard decisions every day about what is going to work best for my publisher’s list.

Then as evening comes, I put on my writer’s cap and begin work on my novel. I polish and tighten, knowing that someone like the editor-me [who is a little stressed and overwhelmed by stories] is going to look at this novel one day and make up their minds pretty quickly as to whether this is something that they can take forward. I know how rare it is to find that RIGHT book, so I know how hard I have to work.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on a fantastical adventure novel called THE BOOK OF WONDERS which re-imagines the life of one of the greatest storytellers in history, Scheherazade, the narrator of Arabian Nights. It is for a 10+ audience. I have also just finished a book for teens called OLIVER TWISTED. This will be published by Egmont in Feb 12 and I've written it under the pen name JD Sharpe. You can find out more here: www.olivertwisted.co.uk
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Know yourself, know your book, know that no one knows your book better than you.

"I like this video, it is very well done.  I love the way it builds like a doodle in a notebook, as if what you do is so natural and everyday to you, like a diary, personal, but shows everything it needs to - well done. Xx Laura Crean xX"

Love the latest vidoe. OK. I'm guessing you did the writing and the screenshots on an ipad, saved it as a video and then dropped it on to the background. Am I right? Am I? Eh?

Results out today - thank you so much!

Yes, wasn't it - I thought he managed to put an interesting slant on the archetypes, which is not an easy thing to do. He came across well, too, as warm and humorous. I enjoyed all my sessions and learned an enormous amount - my head is still buzzing!
