What impresses me even more than the award is the fact that you expect the book you're just starting to be finished by the summer! Perhaps non-fiction is easier...

Profile

About Me
I have been writing for over thirty years but only got down to learning the craft seriously since retirement. I have self-published one novel, Midsummer Legend, for ages 10+, about meerlings, a people evolved from otters, who have had a difficult life since another people evolved from apes and tried to take over. I am currently seeking an agent for another novel, Muncle Trogg, for age 8+ about a giant boy who is too small.
What are you working on at the moment?
I have started work on a my next novel about a boy who goes in search of his missing mother's family and finds himself mixed up in magic. I am also working on several picture book ideas and am doing a distance-learning illustration course with a view to having a go at the illustrations myself.
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
It's too early in 2009 to answer this question. But in 2008 I found 'The Pencil' by Allan Ahlberg and Bruce Ingman particularly inspired.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
I've been learning for so long that I don't come across much nowadays that I haven't heard before - I just haven't mastered the art of putting it all into practice at the same time yet!

You're a writer! Of course you need therapy!

The best thing to do, Janet, is give the questionaire to someone who knows you well. My wife's an Expressive and she didn't think she uses many gestures! She could generate electricity if we wired her to the National Grid!

Hi Janet, I realised when I got home that I hadn't put the numbers on the axes, so it might be that you have simply placed yourself the wrong way round! The horizontal axis is +1 to +9 to the right of centre, and -1 to -9 to the left. The vertical axis is +1 to +9 above the line, and -1 to -9 below.

The letters simply refer to different kinds of behaviour that put you to the left or right, and above and below. You can cheat if you analyse it. The questionaire is very broad, and changing one answer can put you in a different box. Also, your perception of your behaviours might not be the same as someone elses - the fact that you told me to speak up suggests that you're not such a mouse after all!

Send me your email and I'll send you a new questionaire. Hope you enjoyed the talk, despite the urinal references!

Hi Janet
Have you been doing loads of writing since the conference? It was energising, wasn't it?
