About Me
I write teen fiction, although I work on other genres sometimes. I work as an archaeologist and enjoy walking the local woodlands and exploring new places. My first novel, The Faerie Conspiracies, was published last year. The book's website is www.thefaerieconspiracies.com.
What are you working on at the moment?
Now I'm working on Blood Tide - a story set in 1733 about a mulatto slave who is shipped from the caribbean plantation she grew up in only to be sucked into piracy against her will.
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
My favourite children's books are the Skullduggery Pleasant books, Spiderwick, and loads more. At the moment I'm on a pirate kick, so anything with treasure, ships, or swords makes me smile.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Marketing your book doesn't have to cost a fortune; with the right contacts, it can be free!

stories and launch

Well, I'd been away for a long while and now I'm debating which bit of news to post first.

Okay, good news... I have had a short story accepted, which I'm very excited about. I'd been pulled away from my novel for many short stories. This year I've sent about 6 stories to US e-zine Shimmer and each time they come back saying they really loved it but there was just X wrong with it, etc. It seems that I've been teetering on the edge of a good story, but not actually crossing the brilliant line.… Continue

short story competition

I thought some people might be interested in this - it's Wyvern's first short story competition and top prize is £100, followed by two £25 runner ups. As it is the first competition, I expect there will be fewer submissions and therefore a bigger chance of winning. Also, the standard of SCBWI members has far higher (certainly for the anthology submissions).

What is the Wyvern Short Story Competition?
Wyvern Publications now has a short story competition every year. The top story wins £100 and… Continue

back on track

I've been avoiding SCBWI ning pages and I'm soooo sorry. It's only because the SCBWI yahoo groups is so good at updates and I've also got the teen fiction ning pages to run. So there are a few updates since my last posting...

Amaline's Pirates got the attention of an agent who said he'd like to see something for an older audience. I showed him The Howling Moon, my werewolf story for 9-12 year olds. He liked it, suggested changes, then dropped it. Ouch!!!

I'll be working more on both stories af… Continue

Twilight

I was talking to a friend last week who was amazed that I liked Twilight. ‘Really?’ he said. ‘And you’re a published author and all!’

It struck me then, how snobbish the book world could be. I’ve heard people slate the Twilight books before I read them – the characters are unreal, the language is too advanced for teens, she made up folklore, she broke rules….

The last whinge got my wind up and I read the books. What happened to me then, proved how easily it is to be rule-obsessed and miss the… Continue

Will your slave-cum-pirate get to do any swashbuckling? I'm all for it! You mentioned LBF ... It'd be great to see you guys again; what are the dates? Maybe I could make it. Never been to a book fair. BTW, it's elrenner@btinternet.com if you feel just like a chat sometime; I'm useless at any other correspondence, but usually get the emails done. bw, E

Hi Holly! Great to see you here on Ning. Welcome. No, Castle isn't coming out till Feb '10. But Orchard have bought the first two books, and the second is done to everyone's satisfaction. Castle has some structural issues and its vital to get it as good as poss. so the others have a chance of getting published. How's your writing and fencing going? I've found a great club!
