About Me
When I was about seven, I wrote and illustrated a picture book about a family of ants. I sent it off to a publisher who, very politely rejected it and encouraged me to carry on with the books. Well, I ignored them and after leaving school studied fashion illustration and journalism. After art college, I ignored my parents advice to accept a promising job offer and went to live in Spain for two years and spent my time painting signs for restaurants and bars. I returned to England and spent the next sixteen years working as a graphic designer in the sign & exhibition industry as well getting married and having two children. Two years ago I realised that my desire to write & illustrate wasn't going to go away so I promised myself, and my family, that I would try to do something about it. Last year I had a small range of greetings cards published and sold throughout the UK. I work mainly in polymer clay and collage. Now I'm back to where I was at seven years old - sending out picture book dummies to publishers....and hoping!
What are you working on at the moment?
I'm working on two picture books - both books using the clay figure technique that I use on my greetings card designs. I've also made a tentative plan for a children's novel. This may remain as a plan!
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
That's too difficult. Can I have more time?
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
I've learned that writing/illustrating for children is so much more demanding (and compelling) than I imagined it would be. I'm learning that hurdle one ( the big one) is getting seen & finally, I'm learning that I'm not alone in trying!
