Dave Jeffery: Author

Profile

About Me
Member of the Society of Authors, Dave Jeffery is 44 and lives with his family in rural Worcestershire. He was born in The Black Country and spent most of his youth dreaming of writing and drawing comic strips for DC Thompson, creators of The Beano and The Dandy.

Dave completed his first novel, Badlands, at the age of ten and admits that it was 'pretty awful'. He still has it hidden somewhere in his loft. At school he used to write and illustrate comics for his school friends, selling them for a few pennies. At 15 years of age, he was invited to Dundee to see DC Thompson’s offices after sending his portfolio to them. Nothing may have come of the visit but the dream of getting work published continued.

This year has seen this life-long ambition fulfilled when his red-haired heroine, Beatrice Beecham was accepted for publication by Chipmunka Publishing Ltd, London. This adventurous, super-sleuth teenager is currently on her second adventure with a third, Beatrice Beecham’s Cryptic Crypt, due out in autumn 2009.

When he is not writing novels Dave works as a mental health practitioner. He has published an academic book with a major publishing company, and articles in his field of mental health whilst presenting on the international stage. He is in the process of writing more articles for the nursing press for publication in 2009.

He is also author of Finding Jericho, a novel for young adults exploring the relationship between a 15 year old boy and an uncle who has been diagnosed with manic depression. This book has been endorsed by the major mental health charity MIND.

If people would like more information about his work, Dave can be reached here or through his website: www.davejeffery.webs.com, or directly at: davebjeffery@btinternet.com.

What are you working on at the moment?

Updates can be found at: www.davejeffery.com.
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
Riding Icarus by Lilly Hyde.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
It is the characters who tell the tale, not the author!

Thank you so much for your advice. I really took it to heart and have started fleshing out the characters that are going to stay with me (other than just the main character). It's liberating to be able to introduce a character and develop them a bit without having to make them a full part of the storyline in the first book.

I've ordered Beatrice. She'll be sneaking up and spying in my window any day now. I'll write you back as soon as I've read them.

best,
Lauren

Hi Dave,

Your work looks fascinating. I love dark, wild Beatrice. I have a question for you: how did you set up your first book to prepare the reader for a series?

If you have time, I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the info about your book signing - not cheeky at all - why don't you create an event with the details. I've only just realised that anyone on Ning can create an event - if you don't want to make it public, you can set it so that the whole wide web can't find you and invite people individually. The events tab is across the top of the page.

Hi Dave

No, it's not my first NHS job. I've also done some illustrations for the Maudsley and, many years ago, filed x-rays for a living at a hospital in Essex.

You're work looks great, I'll have a peep at your website later.
