Big Thanks Candy

A huge thank you to Candy for keeping me up to date with all of the latest news and for all the effort that goes into this site. I was recently told about The Booksellers Children's Books Annual Conference, which I was luckily able to attend. As a newcomer to the 'trade' it was an extremely useful day and one which is helping me enormously with my current work. This is my first 'open message' so I hope I've got it right. Like so many other newcomers I've got a lot to learn about how all this…See More

About Me
I'm Happy. I don't believe it's possible to write children's books if you're unhappy, or at least discontentented. Being fed up sometimes doesn't help either. So, I'm happy and will no doubt continue to be so provided I keep writing stories that children tell me they love. It's so much more rewarding than my old job in Westminster where so many people were unhappy - and yet, most of them spent their time 'telling stories'.
What are you working on at the moment?
A series of picture books under the heading 'Muddy Waters'. In Series One Muddy & his chums, all animated narrowboats get up to many and varied adventures on the British inland waterways. There are ten books published by Windlass Publishing and they have now sold just over 26,000 since October 2009 [as at January 2012] We are looking to convert the books into the eBook format for all of the currently available platforms. We are also developing our audio books with two well known actors. see www.muddywaters.org.uk (ages 2-7)
If you had to recommend just one children's book you've read in the last year, what would it be?
Power Pups by David Le Harpe
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
If you don't care about your characters no-one else will. Just don't care too much......

Hi Dan,

The critique group's working really well - there's only 6 of us but that seems to be working for now. Maybe we should all get together for an evening beverage or two soon...!

Hi Dan,

My friend has just told me that the book you gave me for his son (the London one) is now a firm favourite - they're off to buy some more!

Hi Dan,
Always happy to chat about writing especially the self-publishing side of things. Looks like you're doing really well!
I'm about three quarters the way through my fifth book which is a YA ghost story. Loving it, but a different ball game this time!
