I'm glad that Anna Bowles, the editor who recently joined SCBWI", likes the atmosphere at SCBWI meetings! I certainly do. Everyone is so enthusiastic and willing to learn and to share information. I know we authors have to BE PROACTIVE about selling…

I do like this post! It captures the problem. II find a lot of self-promotion actively distasteful but - well, you said it. All one can really do is try to be one of the less boring voices amid the billion-strong blare.

What a fantastic blog post - thanks so much! What I love about SCBWI and I've not even been here that long, is the buzz I get hanging out with everyone. Just listening to the stories and everyone's journey to this point is just thrilling and incred…

Yeah, I've noticed that the SCBWI bulletin has quite a high focus on author's activities after publication, whereas in the UK we are more focused on getting there in the first place. But you're right, Candy, it's important to keep growing the scope…

in the united states, scbwi attracts a lot of published authors and we are hoping that with the success of the undiscovered voices, we will keep and build the society to the same level of engagement with the old hands.

There's a detailed discussion of Authonomy here: http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/eoin-purcells-blog/469f3410e29eb59057b03e180281ba71 I feel a blog post on the outsourcing of slush piles coming on.

Indeed - I expected a much higher proportion of bimblers.

Don't worry, you certainly don't come across as an evil old prune in the flesh! (pun intended) What I like about SCBWI is the mix of abilities and accomplishments of the people I've met so far, and I'm hoping that conference will throw up an even w…

This time I will look for the dodo! But my experience last time makes me wonder if I was somehow in the wrong building, if not actually a parallel dimension. To get to the bar area you're describing, you come in from the south bank, pass the RFH boo…

Perhaps you could just put a kids' book on the table. That should make it clear without making everyone stare at the group.

About Me
Former editor at Egmont, now following a number of freelance avenues.

Blogging about some of this, and asking awkward itchy questions, at:
http://chocolatekeyboard.blogspot.com/
What are you working on at the moment?
Series fiction for a packager (the project is confidential as yet), a portfolio of picture book texts, working up ideas for 6-9s and YA.
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
For self-interested reasons I'd like people to read Return to the Hundred Acre Wood (the Winnie-the-Pooh sequel), which I edited. I await the inevitable mixed reactions with interest.
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
Some of the dark arts of networking!

An editor tries the SCBWI

Cross-posted from http://www.chocolatekeyboard.blogspot.com

This week, I went to a SCBWI social. That’s the word ‘I’ and the word ‘social’ in the same sentence, which is usually the sort of thing that causes my boyfriend to protest: “Who are you and what have you done with Anna?”

But reader, I went.

I joined the SCBWI a couple of months ago, and I must confess the move was preceded by a certain amount of hesitation. I googled widely befo… Continue

Mortgage vs art

Another week, another literary sequel. This time to Hitch-Hiker’s Guide, causing my earnest techie boyfriend to fulminate about ‘blasphemy’ in an endearing fashion. But I intend to read it!

It is also another week of spending all but one day at my desk writing. The schedule for the current commissioned work has hit a snafu (as, lord knows, is the way of 99% of publishing schedules), so here I am, excavating immortal art from t… Continue

Literary sequels, fantasy worlds and Neil Gaiman's Wuthering Heights

This is crossposted from my blog at http://chocolatekeyboard.blogspot.com which seems a bit shameless, but I'm keen to pick up readers!

I’ve been professionally involved with literary sequels, so I might be said to be biased in favour of the genre (if it is one), but if you look at the public reaction to any book in this mode the cries of ‘Blasphemy!’ and ‘It should never be done!’ tend to drown out cautious positive responses.

Objections range from the reasonable: “It’ll never be as good… Continue

Hi Anna,

How are you? I don't know if you remember but we met at the fantasy fiction workshop in September. How's your book going?
