About Me
By day I'm an I.T. Project Manager, but at night I have creative itches that need scratching!

At school in Hong Kong I enjoyed writing but my first love was design. Returning to the UK I completed an Art Foundation (KIAD), a BA in Industrial Design (Loughborough) and a Master’s in Design Strategy (Brunel).

At Uni I started writing. First poems; then sketches; a sitcom and finally an unfinished novel. I was bumbling along nicely when babies came along (two boys). Through them I rediscovered the wonderful world of the children's picture book, found it wasn't just the Mr Men (my childhood staple and still a winner), and that there was a place for a guy like me that loves to write and draw.

To date the writing/illustrating combination is most evident in Squiggle, stories illustrated with a single continuous line that changes from people, to animals, plants and objects and allows the child to follow both story and line. Squiggle led to my first commission from Autumn Publishing to illustrate a drawing activity book for children.

Samples of my writing and illustration are on my website www.alexcraggs.com
What are you working on at the moment?
A series of 'Animuddle' picture books. One story finished, three completed drafts, and a couple of others at early stages. I'm starting to sketch out the artwork for the characters.
If you were asked to recommend just one children's book published this year, what would it be?
Tyrannosaurus Drip - Julia Donaldson/David Roberts. I love rhyming texts!
What is the most important thing you learned about writing or illustrating this year?
There is so much more to learn!

Hi Alex,

I do too, Hong Kong's got a very special place in my heart. I was about 6 when we moved out there. You're right, I was in the 1st form during 1988-89, it was the year of the mock US presidential elections, but I was in Nansen... but I was in the debating society, were you?

Hi Alex,
I saw your comments with Jeannie. I was in Hong Kong from around 83 to 89! I did a year a Island School before leaving, and before that was at KRJS.

Did you do the canoe trip round the headland, and orienteering? Also, do you remember the awful packed lunches?

Hi Alex
It was nice to see you at the talk last night. I haven't thought about Wu Kwai Sha in ages - great memories.

Yeh well, Gotta keep up. I've been busy pitching story ideas and trying to rewrite my book proposal. Don't know if I'll be going to the writers' circle while this wintery "mix" (as we say in the US) lashes the country. That said, let's stay in touch either way.

Yeh. Well, One must keep up with each possible communication/networking vehicle.

I'm o.k. -- just waiting for the spring, like everyone else in Britain.
I really like your page. It's made me laugh and smile. Don't know if I'll make the writers' circle this week. It's supposed to snow tonight (Mon.) and tomorrow.

Hi Alex
We didn't overlap, but i remember the zoo as well and the 2nd pagoda, although i'm afraid I used to hide in the1st pagoda with a book, and then when people started coming back from the 3rd pagoda I would saunter back, breaking into a run when in sight of the steps. I did once run all the way to the 3rd pagoda and back just out of curiosity, and my teacher said she would have to put me in the team so i went back to my old ways.(which I regret). We didn't have spring rolls in the tuck shop, just hamburgers, mars bars, sweets and coke. Was Greg still in the tuck shop when you were there? Island school had a reunion here last summer but it was very expensive and lasted for a whole weekend so i didn't go.

Hi Alex
I know Mansfield rd. I went to Island School too, but only up to the 3rd year. Before that i went to Glenealy and we lived in mid-levels near the long escalator, and Hay Ling Chau, a tiny island.
I went to HK about 5 years ago. It was great showing it to my kids and they all loved it. It still felt like home to me too.

HI Alex, where did you live in HK? I read Gwailo a couple of years ago. Have you been back since?
Happy new year!
