NE SCBWI is holding a critique session on the morning of the 6th Oct followed by an afternoon workshop led by Steve Hartley.
Workshop Introduction:
What fundamentally drives how we make decisions? What exactly is peer-pressure? Using advertisements, I show how the language we use betrays what motivates us, and discuss how to make the actions of your characters believable and their choices consistent. Includes soul-searching, impertinent questions, mind-games and of course, a short writing exercise.
Participants:
This workshop is suitable for any writer, regardless of the genre/age-group they
write for, even picture books. If your story has characters in it, then it’s relevant!
Preparation:
Prior to the workshop delegates need to think about an important decision they have had to make: eg. the career/house/car/holiday they chose, etc, and make a few notes about why they made the decision.
Steve Hartley:
Undiscovered Voices 2008 winner, and author of the hilarious Danny Baker Record Breaker series of books published in January and July 2010 by Macmillan Children’s Books. Ever the optimist, Steve has been presenting a version of this workshop to health care professionals for many years in the hope they might understand their patients better. You can see more about Steve here http://www.stevehartley.net/
Critique times:
10:00am – 12:00pm
Workshop times:
12:00pm - 1:00pm: lunch and networking
1:00pm - 3.30pm - workshop
3.30pm : Any questions, final thoughts etc.
(As the workshop is very interactive, these timings ebb and flow somewhat!)
Cost: £10 SCBWI member. £15 non-SCBWI member (The cost does not include lunch, which can be purchased from the library café or you are welcome to bring your own.)
Please email Maureen Lynas on northeast@britishscbwi.org for booking forms and more details.
