SUMMARY:BEYOND BORDERS: Art, Narrative and Culture in Picture Books
DESCRIPTION:<b>2nd International Symposium New impulses in Picturebook
  Research</b>\n\n<b>Faculty of Education\nUniversity of Glasgow (UK)\n
18-20 September 2009</b>\n\nThis Symposium aims to continue the discus
sion of the group of scholars working on many different aspects of pic
turebooks which began at the University of Barcelona in September 2007
. These international symposiums promise to be a major bi-annual event
in the world of picturebook research and scholarship.\n\nThe 2nd Symp
osium in Glasgow will include presentations that provide a new focus f
or research and scholarship through questions of what it means to go b
eyond borders in art, narrative and culture in picturebooks. This will
act as a unifying theme for the two strands that were developed in Ba
rcelona: the literary/artistic approach and the audience/child respons
e appproach. It also reflects the intercultural ethos of the symposium
.\n\nWe are also proud to announce that the renowned Scottish artist,
<b>Mairi Hedderwick</b>, author of the famous Katie Morag picturebooks
will be talking about her work during the Symposium and we will be ho
sting an exhibition of some of her work.\n\nAs well as presentations b
y most of the expert scholars who attended the 1st Symposium, we will
be welcoming a number of new speakers whom we are sure will significan
tly contribute to the ongoing dicussions.\n\nWe warmly welcome partici
pants who wish to take part in our discussions and develop networks wi
th other scholars. You will be a valuable contributor to the proceedin
 gs.\n\nOn <b>Saturday 19th September,</b> we especially welcome one-da
y participants who will have the opportunity to listen to Mairi Hedder
wick as well as to papers which are relevant to current issues in lite
 racy education.\n\nFor a registration form, contact\n\n<b>Conference &
amp; Visitor Services Office\nUniversity of Glasgow\nNo.3 The Square\n
 Glasgow\nG12 8QQ\nTel: +44(0)141 330 5385</b>\n\nThere are options to
register for the entire conference or for Saturday only.\n\nThis year,
the Symposium will also provide a forum for the dissemination of the
research by the teams participating in the Visual Journeys Project. Th
is international project involves children from different parts of the
world responding to the same wordless picturebooks which deal with th
e themes of journeys, migration and the power of the visual image itse
lf. Speakers from the USA, Spain and Australia will be participating i
n this panel.\n\nFinally, there will be an opportunity to see an exhib
ition of Scottish picturebooks and children’s literature in the Univ
ersity Library, as well as of some of the books that will be discussed
in the Symposium. Several publishers will be bringing their books to
the event.\n\nIn addition, there will also be a space provided for pos
tgraduate students to meet and form their own research network (for mo
re information on this event, please contact e.arizpe@educ.gla.ac.uk).
