As it’s the beginning of the year, it seems appropriate to make our first NE York workshop about beginnings – How have you established your characters? Is there a hook? Have you set the right tone? What are you promising the reader? We’ll be analysing the work of various published authors and applying their techniques to your work. Bring your work (works) in progress and be prepared to write and edit!
Illustrators – we’ll be analysing first pages – how do the images and words work together to create the hook, the character, the tone. How is body language used to create character? Bring work and be prepared to draw!

Comment by Shalini Vohra on February 4, 2012 at 19:14 Great! All the very best for the UV pitch. I am not entirely sure how all that works yet but wish you the very best of luck!!!!!!!!
Comment by Maureen Lynas on February 4, 2012 at 19:06 The next one is 14th April and we have a very special and fun guest - soon to be announced - so put the date in the diary! No, I won't be going to London, I can only get there every now and then unfortunately and I'll have been twice for the UV. But if I get a deal I'll be going more often!
Comment by Shalini Vohra on February 4, 2012 at 19:00 It hadn't started snowing till then, though it's coming down heavily as I type. The car has been taken away but won't be looked at till next week. Which means a troublesome journey to make it to the 9 am class on Monday. Oh the joys of living away from the city!
I was so looking forward to seeing everyone today :((. And also meeting your lovely and talented daughter. When is the next one Maureen and are you coming for the book camp in London on 6th March?
Comment by Maureen Lynas on February 4, 2012 at 18:27 You were missed! I told everyone how lovely you are and read your message out. Morag remembered you from Winchester too. Such a shame, I was looking forward to seeing you again. I hope you kicked that car good and hard! And I hope you weren't being snowed on at the time.
Comment by Shalini Vohra on February 4, 2012 at 10:46 I return home frustrated after a lot of pushing, shoving and kicking of our 10 year old car. No road side recovery either which didn't help! Sorry everyone and hope it was a good one.
Comment by Maureen Lynas on February 2, 2012 at 19:52 Paul's asked about lunch time arrangements. There is a cafe in the library and you can purchase food and eat it in the workshop room, or you can bring your own food. Or take a break and clear off for a bit. What ever suits you.
See you on Saturday.
Comment by Maureen Lynas on January 30, 2012 at 22:10 Paper or laptop will be fine. We'll be working on our own pieces this time, normally we bring extra copies when we critique but we're trying something different on Sat. so you won't need to share any.
Illustrators - can you bring a few picture books that inspire you, please.
Thanks
Comment by Shalini Vohra on January 30, 2012 at 21:44 Great! Looking forward to meeting everyone. Should I just bring my laptop or would you recommend bringing some print outs of my work as well?
Comment by Maureen Lynas on January 30, 2012 at 21:39 We have non-member Jonathan Sillence attending too. He's an illustrator, he's been before.
